How Murmelt works
No servers, no accounts, no middlemen. Murmelt is a window onto the Nostr network — you bring the identity, the relays do the rest.
- 1
Generate your key
Your identity is a cryptographic key created on your device. No email, no phone number, no signup — just a key pair that's yours alone.
- 2
Chat end-to-end encrypted
Messages are encrypted on your device with NIP-17 before they leave. Relays only see ciphertext. Files are sealed with AES-GCM before upload.
- 3
Meet new people
Spin the roulette to match with someone new, or share your public key to let friends find you. You stay in control the whole time.

For gay, bi, and queer people an anonymous chat is often the safest way to meet new people. Read about our free gay chat.

Sometimes you want to talk without it following you around. Anonymous chat isn't about hiding — it's about choosing what you share, and with whom.
- No phone number, no email, no profile tied to your real identity.
- Your contact list and messages live on your device, not in a company's database.
- Switch relays anytime — your identity goes with you, not the platform's.
- Delete your local data and the conversation is gone from your side. No history to mine.
How Murmelt compares
The mainstream messengers are convenient. Murmelt is private.

Safety and trust
Talking to strangers comes with real risks. Murmelt gives you the tools to manage them, but no app can remove human judgment from the equation.
- Block anyone, anytime. Blocked users can't message or call you again.
- Report abuse to your relays. Bad actors can be flagged across the network.
- Your private key never leaves your device. No one can impersonate you without it.
- Read the safety tips in our FAQ before you start.
