- A relay is an independent server that receives a message and passes it on. Different people and organizations can run relays.

- Murmelt can use several relays at once. If one is unavailable or no longer suits you, you can replace it with another.

Most messengers create an account for your phone number or email. Murmelt creates a secret digital key directly on your device instead.

- Save the key inside an ordinary PNG image. The picture looks normal, but it can bring your profile back later.

Murmelt keeps no readable chat archive
There is no central Murmelt database containing phone numbers, passwords and readable private conversations. Your chats belong to the people in them.
What private really means
Murmelt protects the contents of your conversation. A few simple choices still matter when you want to stay anonymous.
A relay sees your connection
It cannot read your private message, but it can see the internet address you connect from. A trusted VPN can hide that address from the relay.
Your backup is the spare key
Murmelt cannot send you a password reset. Store your backup image somewhere safe so you can always return to your profile.
Choose what you share
The person you chat with can still copy a message or image. Share your real name, location or photos only when you feel comfortable.
