Yes. Murmelt doesn't ask for a phone number, email, or any personal information. Your identity is a cryptographic key generated locally on your device. As long as you don't share personal details in chat, your conversations can't be tied to who you are. And if you want to go further: in Settings you can hide your IP address — traffic is then routed through the Tor network for a high degree of anonymity.

Nostr is an open protocol for decentralized, censorship-resistant communication. Instead of one company's servers, Nostr uses a network of independent relays. You choose which relays to use, and your identity (a key pair) works across all of them.

Murmelt is free and open. The app doesn't charge anything. Relays and Blossom servers may have their own limits or policies, but you can switch to different ones anytime.

Your private key is the only way to access your identity. If you lose it, your account cannot be recovered — there is no backend, no password reset, no support team that can help. Export a backup image the first time you log in.

A passkey lets you log in without your backup image — it stores an encrypted copy of your key on your relays. However, that copy is only as durable as the relays you use: if you switch relays or a relay goes offline and doesn't come back, the copy may no longer be reachable. And the passkey itself usually lives only in the browser or device where you created it. Keep a backup image anyway, so you can always get back in no matter what happens to your device or relays.

Every message is encrypted on your device using NIP-17 before being sent to Nostr relays. Only the recipient's public key can decrypt it. Relays, Blossom servers, and anyone in between only ever see encrypted ciphertext.

Yes. Calls run peer-to-peer over WebRTC, with signaling through Nostr relays. The media stream flows directly between you and the other person — Murmelt never routes or records it.

Murmelt is only a client — an app that runs in your browser and connects to the Nostr relays you choose. It doesn't store any data on its own servers, so reports must go where the content actually lives. You can report a user in the app, which flags their profile to your relays (NIP-56), and each relay operator has their own reporting and moderation policies you can contact directly. Media files like images are stored on Blossom servers, which are also third parties — use their reporting channels (or DMCA) for illegal media content.
