Yes. Murmelt doesn't ask for a phone number, email, or any personal information. Your identity is a cryptographic key generated locally on your device. As long as you don't share personal details in chat, your conversations can't be tied to who you are.

Every message is encrypted on your device using NIP-17 before being sent to Nostr relays. Only the recipient's public key can decrypt it. Relays, Blossom servers, and anyone in between only ever see encrypted ciphertext.

Nostr is an open protocol for decentralized, censorship-resistant communication. Instead of one company's servers, Nostr uses a network of independent relays. You choose which relays to use, and your identity (a key pair) works across all of them.

Your private key is the only way to access your identity. If you lose it, your account cannot be recovered — there is no backend, no password reset, no support team that can help. Export a backup image the first time you log in.

Yes. Calls run peer-to-peer over WebRTC, with signaling through Nostr relays. The media stream flows directly between you and the other person — Murmelt never routes or records it.

Murmelt is free and open. The app doesn't charge anything. Relays and Blossom servers may have their own limits or policies, but you can switch to different ones anytime.
